Maybe Dad's not so bad.....

Hanna_and_dad_001

Those early teen years for young girls. For those of us Dads with young daughters, I think you might be able to relate with me here on this one. There comes a time (just as they hit their teen years) when they develop a huge case of "attitude", along with "I know everything-idous" and think their dad is the absolute worst. Above all, they tend to "tune out" their Dad and not talk or listen to our fatherly advice.

Well, that's how my youngest daughter (Hanna) had reacted to me over the past couple years till recently. Up until last summer, I had been Hanna's softball coach since she was 8 years old bringing her up through the ranks of competitive travel softball. Hanna_buntingThe entire family spent our summer weekends in various cities participating in softball tournaments, and occasionally a softball clinic. Heck, we even spent many winter nights in batting cages and inside cold barns perfecting her hitting, fielding, pitching and throwing mechanics.

When she reached 13, she came to me and said softball was no longer fun and didn't want to play any longer. Wow, this hit me hard (to say the least), but I could tell as her father and coach she was serious and wanted some time away. I had really enjoyed coaching her and all my players but decided to step away from coaching as well.

Some after effects of Mohican

Mohican_bug_bite_1I know, this looks nasty. Trek - Ohio Valley team rider Jason Leaman apparently was biten by a bug during his Mohican 100k adventure last weekend. He and wife Lisa noticed the red puffy area following the race and decided to check with the family doctor to be on the safe side.Mohican_bug_bite_2

The doctor said it was just a regular bug bite and since he was exercising the bite went straight into this blood stream and caused the streaks. Ouch!!

Mohican_100_race_31_may_2008_150 Hope your healing up now Jason. Congrats on your finish Jason.

Ladies Night Out "in the BURGH"

Cg_at_topChris Garrison (Trek FIT Representative) paid a visit to Pittsburgh last night as a guest of the Trek Store of Pittsburgh (Shadyside) as they hosted their "Ladies Night Out". Even with the mighty Penguins playing at the Iggloo (Hockey Stanley Cup Finals for you non team sport lovers) didn't stop approximately 30+ ladies from joining in the festivities for this evening.

The store looked great as all the women guests were treated as VIP's (well, I should say their always VIP's, but this night was extra special), received a complimentary goodie bag, great snacks provided by the local Whole Foods, and some great giveaways at the close.Food_curtesy_of_whole_foods_2

Chris spoke to the group about the Trek WSD bikes and what makes them so special, women's fit, choosing the right saddle, proper clothing for riding and also great tips on quickly changing a flat tire without turning yourself into a greasy mess. She also turned them onto a new women's riding club that has just started up in cooperation with Trek Bicycle (check it out here) recently.

I've loaded additional pictures from the evening in my "Rides and Events Photo Album".

Busy Weekend.....and a toast to all MOMS on "Mother's Day"

Wings_at_bw3_2It rained pretty steady this past Friday night till about 11pm, but the weather forecast promised to be mostly sunny for all of Saturday. I had just finished putting together the finishing touches to the Fuel 69er and was anxious to get it on the trail. With all the rain of late, I knew the only trail that would be decent to ride would be Mohican, and my plan was to get a several miles on the Top Fuel before noon Saturday.

Along with a chance to ride here's a list of other events I planned to do this Saturday:

  1. help arrange medium sized rocks along my wife's landscaping beds (I hate working in the yard)
  2. pick up her mother's day gift(s)
  3. take pictures of my eldest daughter Rachel and her prom date (Josh) before they set off for their big event (Prom Night)
  4. Meet up with my PA buddy Travis Saeler and join the Ernie's crew for their evening Night Ride

I awoke at 7am Saturday morning to sunny skies and the hope the trails at Mohican where going to be nice and dry.

Building up a Top Fuel 69er

Top_fuel_69er_out_of_box_2At last! A Top Fuel 69er arrived at the house this past Friday and I finally got a chance today to break open the box and begin to put it together. The bike was packaged extremely well to help aid against any potential shipping damage and just ridding the bike of all the packing material took several minutes.

Top_fuel_69er_pete_3Next, I called in my good friend and top notch mechanic "Pete" to help me complete this new ride. In no time at all Pete and I had this bike together which allowed us to sit back with our favorite adult beverage and admire our handy work.

Hurry up and get here Spring!

Bob_towpath_2Now think about this one.

If you weren't a hardcore cyclist and you rode up along side this guy while driving your car, wouldn't you think he was a little bit whacked?? Yeah, I agree with you but rather it's just me showcasing some new 2008 products (Trek Sonic Helmet and Serfas Eyewear). That is actually blue skies in the background.

Well, I don't know about you, but enough of the winter, cold, rain and general dull skies already and bring on SPRING!! I got out early last week (Tuesday) late afternoon on a ride that had plenty of sunshine! I spent most of the 18 mile ride on nearby roads, but decided to jump on the towpath Towpath for a short stretch south of Navarre, Ohio and to my surprise was pretty solid. Even with all the snow and rain it was still plenty hard enough for a stable ride. It still was a bit cold, but I was able to shed my winter riding boots for my regular cleated road shoes and full tights for my knickers. Boy, did this feel good and I felt a full 5 mph faster. Okay, maybe not, but I still felt fast.

Blue Man Group (revisted)

Blue_man_concert_01

Nose bleed for sure. The picture above was taken from our actual seats for the Blue Man Concert this past Saturday night at the Quicken Loans Arena. Hey, I tried to score top seats in the front row but they must have been bought up pretty quickly. Since we purchased 7 seats, the best they had left were binocular advanced seating for sure.

Oh well, this was my 1st Blue Man Group concert and I for one was really looking forward to it. My two girls had seen them last year while on a school class trip to Chicago. The concert was held in a much smaller auditorium in Chicago and they were in the first few rows to see them up close and personal.

Also, I've seen them numerous times on You Tube and on guest shots with many evening TV talk shows so I was pumped and ready to go!! My expectation level had been set....set very high for tonight....

The "Whiteout"

Bob_pic_of_snow

It was pretty much nonstop snow from just before noon this past Friday till about 7pm Saturday night in this area of Stark County (Northeast Ohio, Massillon). Reports have the total accumulation from about 12-18" which has been one of the largest snow falls we've had around these parts in quite sometime. In fact, as of Sunday morning our sub development still hasn't seen a snow plow hit our streets. I ventured out last evening making some "fresh tracks" (unfortunately not with my mountain bike) in my Honda Element to check out road conditions in and around my hometown. All the streets didn't look too bad, but it felt like Christmas eve since all the business had closed up sometime earlier that day or didn't open up at all. The only businesses open were a couple "Speedway" convenient stores and one lone McDonalds. Heck, even the local "10" Movie house was closed for the day due to the winter storm. By the way, my Element "ROCKS", even in the snow. It doesn't have a lot of ground clearance, but I was zipping around town with no issues. I had to get out of my sub development with the high snow drifts, but other than that no issues at all. I really like this vehicle.

Coming in like a LION!

Winter_ice_storm_001_2 Winter_ice_storm_002_2 Winter_ice_storm_003_2

Winter_ice_storm_004 Winter_ice_storm_005 Winter_ice_storm_006

You know the saying. The month of March either comes in like a lion and out like a lamb or the reverse, and it appears this year it's coming in like a Lion for sure. I've spent the past couple days commuting to Pittsburgh and then back in the evening slip sliding on the country roads in between. As I was driving through Columbiana County (eastern county that borders PA) I was getting detoured due to fallen trees in the middle of the road, flooding, and down power lines due to the amount of freezing rain that has hit the area.

Let's keep the faith, I believe we'll be getting a good taste of spring just around the corner.
